The idea to start a daily writing habit has followed me constantly for the last few months. Sometimes I’ve been inspired by my friends running a #30dayswriting challenge; other times pushed by the need to sharpen my writing skills for the job.

There are many good reasons for taking up writing as daily routine. Despite that, the reason I’ve never started this challenge is simple, I know myself too well. I would not keep it for long. No matter how hard I’m pushed by the universe or encouraged by people around me, my heart will stay silent.

That is, until I find the ‘Why’ behind it.

The question that drives my writing (and well, any other work, be it building a product or creating a piece of art), is always the Why. What’s the reason for doing it and what value would you bring with your work to the world?

What benefits can I give the readers? Will they really enjoy my writing? Will they learn from it? Are my ideas compelling enough? I would always doubt it. There is too much content out there on the Internet already, I am afraid.

What I discovered, though, is that I simply enjoy writing.

Writing is a journey of discovery

The process of writing serves as a form of meditation or therapy for me. It gives me time to reflect, to listen to my thoughts. I put down words to express how I feel.

I do not subject myself to a goal of publishing an article every single day. Some days I feel the inspiration, other days I will push myself, will be stuck and never press ‘Publish’.

But let me start with the small steps.

The most difficult part of starting writing is starting.
